Overview
Kenya’s National School Meals Programme goes nationwide in January 2027, covering all 47 counties. The programme is scaling from 2.6 million learners toward 10 million by 2030.
The biggest question for parents: is my child’s school in the first phase? Use the checker below to find out, based on your county and school type.
Note: this is an independent guide, not a government website. Confirm details with your school or the Ministry of Education.
First term of 2027 (January), covering all 47 counties.
Which schools are included first?
Public primary schools are the priority; rollout details per county are being finalised.
Is it really free for parents?
The national design is government-funded with no parent contribution required — but county models differ: for example, Murang'a's expanded programme asks parents for about Sh15/day. Confirm with your school what applies in your county.
How many children will benefit?
Starting from 2.6 million learners, scaling toward 10 million by 2030.
Is this a government website?
No. This is an independent guide.
What if my child has food allergies or dietary needs?
Talk to the school early — special dietary needs are a real concern with mass feeding programmes. County menus are being finalised, and schools will need a list of children with allergies or medical diets. Do not assume the standard menu will suit your child; raise it in writing with the headteacher.
Who actually cooks the food at schools?
Implementation models vary by county — some schools cook on-site, others use contracted caterers. The programme is also meant to create local jobs, including cooks and food handlers. If you are worried about quality, ask your school committee how the feeding is organised locally.
Will school fees go down since meals are free?
The meals are government-funded, which should ease the overall cost of schooling, but fee structures are set separately. Do not stop paying fees on the assumption they will drop — confirm with your school what the fee schedule covers and whether any feeding levy is being removed.
How will food hygiene and quality be monitored?
Counties are responsible for implementation, including food safety standards and oversight. As a parent, your school management committee is your first point of contact for hygiene concerns. If you see serious problems, raise them with the county education office — the programme only works if parents watch it.
Are meals served during school holidays?
No. The programme covers school days during term time — that is when learners are present. Holiday feeding is not part of the announced design. Families who depend heavily on the meals should plan for the holiday gaps, and some counties may run separate holiday programmes.
Can parents work or volunteer in the school kitchen?
Local hiring for cooks, food handlers and suppliers is part of the programme's design in many counties. Ask your school management committee or county education office about available roles. Volunteering is also a good way to see food quality for yourself.
What happens if my child transfers schools mid-term?
Your child is covered at any participating public primary school — the entitlement follows the learner, not the school. Make sure the new school has your child's enrolment records. Private schools are not in the first phase, so a transfer to a private school means losing the free meal.
