Saver's Match 2027 Calculator: How Much Free Money You Get

Overview

Starting with the 2027 tax year, the federal Saver’s Match replaces the old Saver’s Credit. Instead of a tax credit, the government deposits real money — 50% of the first $2,000 you contribute to a 401(k), IRA or similar retirement account — directly into that account. That is up to $1,000 a year of free money, and both spouses can each earn it.

The full 50% match goes to single filers with MAGI at or below $20,500 ($30,750 head of household, $41,000 joint), then phases down to zero at $35,500 / $53,250 / $71,000. You claim it on your 2027 return filed in 2028. The IRS began mailing explanatory notices in September–October 2026 — if you got one, this page is for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Saver’s Match real money or just a tax break?
Real money. The Treasury deposits the match directly into your retirement account — unlike the old Saver’s Credit, which only reduced your tax bill.
When do I get the match?
For contributions you make during 2027. You claim it on your 2027 tax return, which you file in 2028, using the new form.
Can both spouses get it?
Yes — each spouse can earn up to $1,000, so a couple can receive up to $2,000 a year combined, subject to the joint income limits.
