Sweden 2027 — Do You Keep Your Benefits?
From January 1, 2027, newcomers must qualify first for 8 residence-based benefits. Check which rules apply to you.
👋 This checker helps you understand Swedish benefit qualification for 2027. It runs entirely on your device — no data is sent or stored. Applications go only through Försäkringskassan or official channels.
⏰ The cutoff is January 1, 2027. Anyone settled in Sweden before that date keeps the old rules. Everyone else must qualify through residence or income. This affects barnbidrag (child allowance), bostadsbidrag (housing allowance), parental benefits and more.
When did you settle in Sweden?
60 months = 5 years (the residence route).
Count consecutive months for the 6-month route. For the 12-of-24 route, count months at ≥ 20,850 kr in the last 2 years (they don't need to be consecutive).
Simplified illustration of Prop. 2025/26:136 (Riksdag decision 20 May 2026). The 8 benefits include barnbidrag, bostadsbidrag, basic parental allowance and guaranteed sickness benefit. Försäkringskassan applies the final decision — this is a free practice tool — not a government website.
Overview
On 20 May 2026 the Riksdag voted through new qualification rules (kvalificering till socialförsäkringen) taking effect on 1 January 2027. Eight residence-based benefits — including barnbidrag (child allowance), bostadsbidrag (housing allowance), the basic parental allowance and the guaranteed sickness benefit — will require newcomers to qualify first.
There are four ways through: (1) you settled in Sweden before 1 January 2027 — then the old rules simply continue for you; (2) five years of residence within a fifteen-year window; (3) income of at least SEK 40,032 a month for six consecutive months; or (4) income of at least SEK 20,850 a month for twelve of the last twenty-four months.
Note: this is an independent guide in English, not a government website. Final decisions are made by Försäkringskassan — verify your situation with them.
I already live in Sweden. Do the new rules affect me?
If you were settled in Sweden before 1 January 2027, no — you keep the old rules. The qualification requirement only applies to people settling on or after that date.
Which benefits are affected?
Eight residence-based benefits, including child allowance (barnbidrag), housing allowance (bostadsbidrag), basic parental allowance and guaranteed sickness benefit.
What counts as qualifying income?
Work income in Sweden at the stated monthly thresholds. The higher threshold (40,032 kr) needs six consecutive months; the lower (20,850 kr) needs twelve months within the last two years.
I'm an EU citizen — do the new qualification rules apply to me?
Yes, if you settle in Sweden on or after 1 January 2027. The rules apply to newcomers generally, regardless of EU or non-EU citizenship. Note that EU free-movement rights are separate from benefit access — this law only governs access to the eight residence-based benefits.
Does student income or unemployment benefit count as qualifying income?
Only work income in Sweden counts toward the income routes — study grants and unemployment benefits do not. You need genuine employment income at the stated thresholds for the required number of months. Check with Försäkringskassan if your situation mixes income types.
Can I combine the six-month and twelve-month income routes?
They are separate routes — you qualify under one of them, not a mixture. If you earned above SEK 40,032 for six consecutive months, use that route; otherwise the twelve-months-in-24 route at SEK 20,850 may fit. The checker above can show which path you are closer to.
Does self-employment income count toward qualification?
In principle, yes — it is work income in Sweden. The key is that it must be documented income at the required monthly level, and Försäkringskassan assesses what counts. Self-employed people should keep meticulous records, since irregular income makes the 'consecutive months' test harder to meet.
What happens if I qualify and then leave Sweden?
Losing your registration as resident (bosatt) generally ends access to residence-based benefits. Short trips are fine, but deregistering when you move abroad cuts the link the benefits depend on. If you return, the rules that apply depend on your new settlement date.
Does this law affect my residence permit or right to work?
No. The qualification rules govern access to eight social insurance benefits only — they do not change immigration law, work permits or EU free-movement rights. Your right to live and work in Sweden is unaffected; only these specific benefits are gated.
When should I contact Försäkringskassan about my situation?
As soon as you have a personal identity number and a planned settlement date — especially if you will arrive around the January 2027 transition. Getting registered early matters because 'settled' status is tied to population registration, and Försäkringskassan makes the final decision on your case.
